Edinburgh is a city that takes culture seriously, and its cinema scene is no exception. With 8 cinemas ranging from modern multiplexes to beloved independent venues, the Scottish capital offers film lovers an exceptional range of options. Whether you are after the latest blockbuster in IMAX or a rare arthouse screening at one of the UK's most historic cinemas, Edinburgh delivers. Here is our guide to cinemas in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh's Cinema Scene
Edinburgh's cinema landscape is a satisfying blend of mainstream and independent. The city centre is compact enough that you can walk between most venues, and the independent cinemas here have a heritage that few other UK cities can match. The Edinburgh International Film Festival, one of the longest-running film festivals in the world, has fostered a deep appreciation for cinema across the city, which is reflected in the quality and variety of its venues.
Major Chain Cinemas
Cineworld Edinburgh at Fountain Park, 130/3 Dundee Street, EH11 1AF, is the city's largest multiplex. Located at the Fountain Park leisure complex, it has plenty of screens and shows all the major releases. It is a short walk from Haymarket station and offers the widest selection of screening times in the city.
Odeon Edinburgh Lothian Road at 118 Lothian Road, EH3 8BG, occupies a prime central location. This Odeon is conveniently placed for the West End and is a popular choice for after-work screenings. The Lothian Road strip also has numerous restaurants for a pre-cinema meal.
Odeon Edinburgh West at 120 Wester Hailes Road, EH14 3HR, serves the western suburbs with easy parking and a quieter, more relaxed experience than the city centre venues.
Odeon Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird at Newcraighall, EH15 3RD, is located within the Fort Kinnaird retail park to the east of the city. It is ideal for combining shopping with a film and has ample free parking.
Vue Edinburgh Ocean Terminal at Ocean Drive, Leith, EH6 6JJ, sits within the Ocean Terminal shopping centre in Edinburgh's rejuvenated waterfront district. Vue offers competitive prices and the Leith location makes for a pleasant outing by the water.
Vue Edinburgh Omni Centre at Greenside Place, EH1 3AU, is right at the top of Leith Walk, moments from the east end of Princes Street. This is arguably the most centrally located cinema in Edinburgh and is particularly convenient if you are staying in the New Town area.
Independent and Arthouse Cinemas
Cameo Picturehouse at 38 Home Street, EH3 9LZ, is one of Edinburgh's most cherished cinemas. Part of the Picturehouse chain, the Cameo has been showing films since 1914, making it one of the oldest continuously running cinemas in Scotland. It screens a thoughtful mix of mainstream, independent, and foreign-language films across three screens, and its bar is a favourite gathering spot for Edinburgh's film community.
Filmhouse at 88 Lothian Road, EH3 9BZ, is Edinburgh's dedicated arthouse and independent cinema. It plays a central role in the Edinburgh International Film Festival and screens everything from world cinema to classic retrospectives. The Filmhouse Cafe Bar is a wonderful spot for a pre-film drink or a post-screening discussion. If you consider yourself a serious film fan, this is the Edinburgh cinema you need to visit.
Premium Formats
Cineworld at Fountain Park is the most likely venue for IMAX and 4DX screenings in Edinburgh. For the biggest releases, this is where you will find the most immersive large-format experience in the city. Vue at the Omni Centre also offers enhanced screens with excellent sound systems, and Odeon's iSense format may be available at the Lothian Road venue for select screenings.
Finding the Best Deals
Vue's pricing is generally the most competitive in Edinburgh, with both the Ocean Terminal and Omni Centre venues offering affordable tickets, particularly on weekdays. Odeon's MyOdeon membership provides regular discounts, while Cineworld Unlimited is excellent value for frequent visitors. The Cameo and Filmhouse both offer membership schemes that reduce ticket prices and provide priority booking for special events and festivals.
Student discounts are widely available across Edinburgh's cinemas, which is no surprise given the city's large student population. Tuesday and Wednesday screenings tend to be the cheapest across all venues.
