The UK has one of the most vibrant cinema industries in the world, and the choice of cinema chains reflects that. From massive multiplexes with every premium format imaginable to intimate boutique cinemas serving cocktails to your seat, there is a chain to suit every taste and budget. But with so many options, it can be hard to know which one is right for you.
This guide breaks down every major UK cinema chain, covering what they offer, what they cost, and what makes each one worth visiting. Whether you are a weekly filmgoer or planning a one-off treat, this will help you choose. Browse all UK cinemas on our cinema listings page.
The UK Cinema Landscape
The UK has around 840 cinemas and over 4,000 screens. The market is dominated by three big chains: Odeon (part of the AMC group), Cineworld, and Vue. Together, they account for around 60% of all UK cinema screens. Behind them sits a diverse mix of premium boutique chains (Everyman, Curzon, Picturehouse), mid-size operators (Showcase, Empire), and hundreds of independent cinemas.
In recent years, the trend has been towards premium experiences. Chains have invested heavily in luxury seating, better food and drink, and premium formats like IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby Atmos. The days of sticky floors and stale popcorn are (mostly) behind us.
Odeon: The UK's Biggest Chain
Odeon is the largest cinema chain in the UK with over 120 locations. Founded in 1930 by Oscar Deutsch (Odeon originally stood for "Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation"), it has been a fixture of British high streets for nearly a century.
Experience: Odeon cinemas range from older, unrenovated sites to the flagship Odeon Luxe venues, which feature reclining seats, wider aisles, and a more upmarket feel. The gap between a standard Odeon and an Odeon Luxe is significant, so check which type your local Odeon is before booking.
Formats: Odeon offers IMAX at selected sites and its own premium large-format screen called iSense. Dolby Cinema is available at the Leicester Square flagship. Sound systems vary by site but many have been upgraded to Dolby Atmos.
Membership: Odeon Limitless costs around 12.99 to 14.99 per month (depending on location) and gives you unlimited standard screenings plus 10% off food and drink. It is one of the best-value cinema subscriptions in the UK if you visit at least twice a month.
Pricing: Standard tickets typically range from 8 to 15 pounds depending on location, day, and time. London venues are at the higher end. Odeon regularly runs promotional pricing on quieter days.
Cineworld: The Format King
Cineworld operates around 100 cinemas in the UK and is the go-to chain for premium format enthusiasts. If you want to see a film in IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, or DBOX, Cineworld is most likely where you will find it.
Experience: Cineworld cinemas are large multiplexes, typically located in retail parks or shopping centres. The experience is functional rather than luxurious, but the sheer range of screens and formats is impressive. Many sites have been refurbished with upgraded seating.
Formats: Cineworld is the exclusive UK home of 4DX (motion seats with water, wind, and scent effects) and ScreenX (270-degree panoramic projection). They also offer IMAX, DBOX motion seating, and Superscreen (their own premium large-format offering with Dolby Atmos).
Membership: Cineworld Unlimited costs around 10.99 to 13.99 per month and includes unlimited standard 2D and 3D screenings. Premium formats (IMAX, 4DX, etc.) cost an additional supplement, typically 2 to 5 pounds per screening. You also get 10% off food and drink and 25% off after 12 months.
Pricing: Standard adult tickets range from 9 to 14 pounds. Premium format tickets can reach 18 to 22 pounds for 4DX or IMAX.
Vue: Best Value Big Chain
Vue operates around 90 cinemas in the UK and has consistently positioned itself as the best-value major chain. Vue was one of the first chains to introduce lower, simpler pricing, and their tickets are often a few pounds cheaper than Odeon or Cineworld for equivalent screenings.
Experience: Vue cinemas are clean, modern multiplexes. While they lack the boutique charm of Everyman or the format range of Cineworld, they offer a reliable, comfortable experience at a fair price. Many sites have been upgraded with reclining seats and improved sound.
Formats: Vue offers IMAX at selected sites and their own premium format called Vue Xtreme, which features a larger screen and Dolby Atmos sound. The range is more limited than Cineworld but covers the essentials.
Membership: Vue does not offer an unlimited subscription like Odeon and Cineworld. Instead, they run regular promotional pricing including Mini Mornings (cheaper weekend morning screenings for families) and Super Monday deals. They also partner with Meerkat Movies for Tuesday and Wednesday discounts.
Pricing: Standard tickets typically range from 6 to 12 pounds, making Vue consistently one of the cheapest major chains. Off-peak and online-only deals can bring prices even lower.
Everyman, Curzon & Picturehouse: Premium & Boutique
These three chains cater to audiences who want a more refined cinema experience and are willing to pay for it.
Everyman is the UK's leading luxury cinema chain. With around 40 venues, mostly in affluent neighbourhoods, Everyman offers sofa-style seating, craft food and cocktails delivered to your seat, and a stylish, intimate atmosphere. Tickets typically cost 15 to 20 pounds, but the experience feels like a genuine treat. Everyman is particularly popular with couples and groups looking for a premium night out.
Curzon focuses on independent, arthouse, and foreign-language cinema alongside mainstream releases. Their venues (Curzon Soho, Curzon Mayfair, Curzon Bloomsbury, and others) are beautifully designed and have a loyal following among serious film fans. Curzon also runs a streaming platform for members. Tickets are around 12 to 18 pounds.
Picturehouse (owned by Cineworld) occupies a similar niche to Curzon, with a mix of mainstream and independent programming in attractive, often historic venues. Picturehouse Central on Shaftesbury Avenue is a flagship location with a rooftop bar. The Ritzy in Brixton and the Duke of York's in Brighton are other standout venues. They offer a Members' Club for regular visitors. Tickets range from 12 to 17 pounds.
Showcase & Empire
Showcase Cinemas operates around 20 sites in the UK, mostly in suburban locations. They are known for their Showcase Cinema de Lux brand, which offers reclining heated seats and a more upmarket experience. Showcase also offers IMAX and their own XPlus premium screens at selected sites. Tickets are competitively priced, typically 10 to 14 pounds.
Empire Cinemas is a smaller chain with around 15 sites. Their flagship Empire Leicester Square is one of London's most iconic cinema venues and a regular host for premieres. Empire also operates IMAX screens at several locations. Pricing is broadly similar to Odeon.
