Jonathan Groff makes his RSC debut as Rosalind in Shakespeare's most joyful comedy
Tony Award-winning actor Jonathan Groff takes on the role of Rosalind in this major new production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, directed by RSC Co-Artistic Director Daniel Evans. Groff, celebrated for his Tony Award-winning performance as Franklin Shepherd in Merrily We Roll Along and his role as King George III in Hamilton, makes his RSC debut in one of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies. He is joined by Fisayo Akinade - known to television audiences as Mr. Ajayi in Netflix's Heartstopper and Dean Monroe in Channel 4's Cucumber - as Celia, in an all-male cast.
What is As You Like It about?
Rosalind is banished from the court of Duke Frederick - but not before she and the young Orlando fall for each other. She escapes to the Forest of Arden with her devoted cousin Celia, disguising herself as a young man named Ganymede. Orlando, also fleeing for his life, arrives in the forest and eventually runs into Ganymede - who pledges to cure his lovesickness by having him woo her... or rather, him. Then the games begin. At its heart, As You Like It is Shakespeare's most sweet-tempered exploration of love in all its forms, celebrating the idea that love falls where it falls - however we identify.
Director, cast and creative team
Daniel Evans directs, bringing together a creative team that includes Set Designer Anisha Fields, Costume Designer Colin Richmond, Lighting Designer Ryan Day, Movement Director Michela Meazza, and Casting Director Charlotte Sutton CDG. The production runs at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 26 September to 7 November 2026, with press night on Tuesday 6 October.
