London in spring is hard to beat. The days are getting longer, the parks are in bloom, and the city’s cultural calendar is absolutely packed. We have just added ten new experiences to tickets.uk London, and they represent some of the best things you can do in the capital right now. Here is a proper look at each one, with neighbourhood context, practical tips, and suggestions for how to build them into a brilliant day or weekend out.

West End Theatre: The Main Event

London’s Theatreland is concentrated around the streets between Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, and Leicester Square. Most of the shows listed below are within a ten-minute walk of each other, making it easy to combine a matinee with lunch or an evening performance with dinner. For the full list of what is on right now, browse our West End tickets page.

Disney’s The Lion King

The Lyceum Theatre sits on Wellington Street, right on the edge of Covent Garden. It is one of London’s most beautiful Victorian theatres, and the perfect home for Julie Taymor’s visually extraordinary production. Arrive early to soak up the atmosphere in the piazza, where you will find street performers, independent shops, and some of the best people-watching in London. The nearest tube is Covent Garden (Piccadilly line), though Temple (District and Circle) is a quieter option. Tickets from £44. Book The Lion King tickets.

Les Misérables

The Sondheim Theatre (formerly the Queen’s) is on Shaftesbury Avenue, the beating heart of the West End. This is musical theatre at its most powerful, with a score that will stay with you for weeks. Before the show, grab a bite on nearby Frith Street or Greek Street in Soho. After the curtain falls, you are perfectly placed for a drink in one of Soho’s countless bars. Nearest tube: Piccadilly Circus. Tickets from £31. Book Les Misérables tickets.

Hamilton

The Victoria Palace Theatre is directly opposite Victoria station, making it one of the easiest West End theatres to reach from anywhere in London (or from Gatwick Airport, for that matter). Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical is a masterclass in storytelling, and the London cast is superb. The surrounding area has improved hugely in recent years, with plenty of good restaurants along Buckingham Palace Road. Tickets from £25. Book Hamilton tickets.

Mamma Mia!

At the Novello Theatre on Aldwych, just south of Covent Garden, this joyous ABBA musical is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. It is the cheapest big-name show on the West End right now, with tickets from just £19, and the atmosphere is always electric. Perfect for groups, celebrations, or anyone who just wants to have a really good time. The nearest tube is Temple, but it is an easy walk from Covent Garden or Holborn too. Book Mamma Mia! tickets.

The Book of Mormon

This is one of the sharpest, funniest musicals ever written, playing at the Gielgud Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. The humour is not for everyone (it earns its adult rating), but if you can handle the creators of South Park at full throttle, you are in for a remarkable evening. Afterwards, stroll through Chinatown for late-night dumplings. Tickets from £25. Book The Book of Mormon tickets.

The Play That Goes Wrong

Tucked away at the intimate Duchess Theatre on Catherine Street (parallel to the Lyceum), this Olivier Award-winning comedy is pure physical theatre brilliance. It runs at just over two hours and is an ideal choice for a midweek evening when you want something light and genuinely hilarious. Nearest tube: Covent Garden. Tickets from £25. Book The Play That Goes Wrong tickets.

Beyond the Stage: Experiences and Attractions

Theatre is only one piece of the London puzzle. The city is packed with world-class museums (most of them free), walking tours, food markets, river cruises, and immersive experiences. Check out our full things to do listings for the latest, or explore our London attractions comparison guide to find the right fit for your interests.

A few ideas to pair with your show:

  • Before a matinee near Covent Garden: Walk along the South Bank from Waterloo Bridge to the Tate Modern, crossing back via the Millennium Bridge. Free, beautiful, and perfect in spring sunshine.
  • Before an evening show near Piccadilly: Visit the National Gallery (free entry) and walk through St James’s Park. You can time it perfectly with a 7:30pm curtain.
  • The morning after a late show: Head to Borough Market for brunch. It is open Wednesday to Saturday and is one of the best food experiences in London.

Build the Perfect London Day

Here is a sample itinerary that works beautifully for a spring day in London:

  1. 10:00am — Arrive at Covent Garden. Browse the market, grab a coffee, soak up the street performers.
  2. 11:30am — Walk through Neal’s Yard and Seven Dials for independent shops and lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants.
  3. 2:00pm — Catch a matinee at the Lyceum, Cambridge, or Duchess Theatre (all within minutes of Covent Garden).
  4. 5:00pm — Walk along the Strand to the Embankment and enjoy views of the Thames.
  5. 6:30pm — Early dinner in Soho or Chinatown.
  6. 8:00pm — Back to the hotel or, if you are feeling ambitious, a second show (it has been done).

For a longer stay, our three-day London itinerary maps out the best way to see the city without rushing.

Neighbourhood Guide: Where to Base Yourself

Where you stay makes a big difference to your London experience. Here is a quick breakdown:

  • Covent Garden / Holborn — Right in the thick of Theatreland. Walk to most shows. Lively atmosphere day and night.
  • South Bank / Waterloo — Slightly cheaper hotels, easy access via Waterloo Bridge. Great cultural institutions nearby (National Theatre, BFI, Southbank Centre).
  • Victoria / Westminster — Perfect if you are seeing Hamilton or Wicked. Excellent transport links to the rest of the city.
  • King’s Cross / St Pancras — Ideal if you are arriving by train from the north. The area around Granary Square has transformed into one of London’s best dining destinations.
