Journey Time & Cost Comparison
Here's a quick overview of the fastest and cheapest route from each airport to the West End (specifically to Tottenham Court Road or Leicester Square, the heart of Theatreland):
| Airport | Best Route | Journey Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| London City (LCY) | DLR + Elizabeth Line | 25 mins | Β£3β5 |
| Heathrow (LHR) | Elizabeth Line | 35 mins | Β£5.60 |
| Gatwick (LGW) | Thameslink/Southern | 35β45 mins | Β£12β18 |

All prices are for single journeys, as of early 2026. Off-peak and advance fares may be cheaper.
From Heathrow (LHR)
Heathrow is London's busiest airport and the one most international visitors arrive at. It's located 15 miles west of central London, and there are several ways to reach the West End.
Best Option: Elizabeth Line β Β£5.60, 35 minutes
The Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) is by far the best option for theatre-goers. It runs directly from Heathrow Terminals 2/3 and Terminal 5 to Tottenham Court Road, which is right in the heart of the West End. Trains run every 5β10 minutes, and the journey takes about 35 minutes.
Step-by-step:
- Follow signs to the Elizabeth Line from the arrivals hall. At Terminals 2/3, the station is in the central terminal area. Terminal 5 has its own station.
- Tap your contactless card or Oyster card at the gates (no need to buy a separate ticket).
- Board any eastbound Elizabeth Line train β they all stop at Tottenham Court Road.
- Exit at Tottenham Court Road. You're now a 5-minute walk from Shaftesbury Avenue and most West End theatres.
Alternative: Heathrow Express β Β£25, 15 minutes to Paddington
The Heathrow Express is faster (15 minutes to Paddington) but costs Β£25 for a single β and you'll still need to get from Paddington to the West End. From Paddington, take the Bakerloo Line to Piccadilly Circus (15 minutes) or walk 10 minutes east to the Elizabeth Line at Paddington and take it one stop to Tottenham Court Road. Unless you're in a genuine rush, the Elizabeth Line direct is better value and almost as quick overall.
Alternative: Piccadilly Line β Β£5.60, 50β60 minutes
The Piccadilly Line runs from all Heathrow terminals to Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. It's the same price as the Elizabeth Line but significantly slower, with more stops. The trains are also older and more crowded. Use this only if the Elizabeth Line is disrupted.
From Gatwick (LGW)
Gatwick is London's second-busiest airport, located 30 miles south of central London in West Sussex. It's well-connected by rail.
Best Option: Thameslink/Southern β Β£12β18, 30β35 minutes
Regular trains run from Gatwick Airport station to London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon, and St Pancras. For the West End, your best bet is:
- Take a Thameslink train to London Bridge (30 minutes).
- Change to the Northern Line (Charing Cross branch) and ride to Leicester Square (10 minutes).
- You're now in the centre of the West End.
Alternatively, take a Southern train to Victoria (30 minutes), then walk 15 minutes north through Green Park to Piccadilly, or take the Victoria Line one stop to Green Park and change to the Piccadilly Line to Leicester Square.
Alternative: Gatwick Express β Β£20, 30 minutes to Victoria
A non-stop express service to Victoria station. It's convenient but more expensive than regular Thameslink/Southern trains that take roughly the same time. Only worth it if you want a guaranteed seat and a slightly more comfortable ride.
Budget Option: National Express Coach β Β£8β12, 90β120 minutes
Coaches run from Gatwick to Victoria Coach Station. Much slower but significantly cheaper, especially if booked in advance online. Not recommended if you have a show to catch that evening.
From Stansted (STN)
Stansted is located 40 miles northeast of London in Essex. It's the hub for many budget airlines including Ryanair, and is one of the furthest airports from the West End.
Best Option: Stansted Express β Β£17β23, 47 minutes
The Stansted Express runs every 15 minutes to Liverpool Street station. From there:
- Exit Stansted Airport and follow signs to the Stansted Express platform (it's directly connected to the terminal).
- Board the Stansted Express β it's a dedicated, non-stop service to Liverpool Street.
- At Liverpool Street, follow signs to the Central Line (westbound).
- Take the Central Line to Tottenham Court Road (3 stops, about 8 minutes).
- Exit the station β you're in the heart of the West End.
Tip: Book Stansted Express tickets in advance online for significant savings. A walk-up single can be Β£23, but advance tickets are often available for Β£12βΒ£15.
Budget Option: National Express Coach β Β£8β12, 60β90 minutes
Coaches run to Victoria Coach Station and Stratford. From Stratford, the Elizabeth Line takes you to Tottenham Court Road in about 15 minutes. Slower but much cheaper, and often the best option for very early or very late arrivals.
From Luton (LTN)
Luton is located 35 miles north of London in Bedfordshire. It's another budget airline hub, used by Wizz Air, easyJet, and Ryanair.
Best Option: Thameslink β Β£16β18, 35β45 minutes
Getting from Luton Airport to the train involves one extra step:
- Take the shuttle bus (or the new DART automated train) from the terminal to Luton Airport Parkway station. This takes about 5β10 minutes.
- Board a Thameslink train heading south. Services run to St Pancras International, Farringdon, City Thameslink, and Blackfriars.
- For the West End, alight at Farringdon and change to the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road (one stop, 4 minutes). Alternatively, stay on to St Pancras and take the Northern Line from King's Cross to Leicester Square (about 10 minutes).
Budget Option: National Express Coach β Β£8β12, 75β90 minutes
Coaches run to Victoria Coach Station. Slower but cheaper, and you avoid the shuttle bus to the railway station.
From London City (LCY)
London City Airport is by far the most convenient airport for the West End. It's located in the Docklands, just 6 miles east of central London, and is primarily used for short-haul European flights and domestic routes.
Best Option: DLR + Elizabeth Line β Β£3β5, 25 minutes
- Exit the airport and follow signs to the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) station, which is directly connected to the terminal.
- Take the DLR westbound to Custom House (one stop, 3 minutes).
- Change to the Elizabeth Line at Custom House and ride westbound to Tottenham Court Road (about 18 minutes).
- You're in the West End. Total journey: approximately 25 minutes, and the cheapest airport transfer in London.
Why London City is ideal for theatre trips: If you can find flights to London City, it's the best airport for a West End visit. The short journey time means you could realistically land at 4pm and be in your theatre seat by 7:30pm with time for dinner in between.
From Southend (SEN)
Southend Airport is located in Essex, about 40 miles east of London. It's a small airport used by a handful of airlines.
Best Option: Greater Anglia β Β£12β16, 55 minutes
- The railway station is a short walk from the terminal.
- Take a Greater Anglia train to London Liverpool Street (approximately 55 minutes).
- At Liverpool Street, change to the Central Line westbound to Tottenham Court Road (8 minutes).
From Eurostar (St Pancras International)
If you're arriving from Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, or another European city by Eurostar, you'll arrive at St Pancras International β one of London's grandest stations and very well-connected to the West End.
Best Option: Northern Line β Β£2.80, 10 minutes
- Exit Eurostar arrivals and follow signs to King's Cross St Pancras Underground station (it's directly connected to St Pancras).
- Take the Northern Line (Charing Cross branch) southbound.
- Alight at Leicester Square (3 stops, about 8 minutes).
- You're in the heart of the West End.
Eurostar tip: Eurostar services from Paris take about 2 hours 15 minutes. If you take an afternoon train, you can arrive in London with plenty of time for dinner and a show. It's one of the most civilised ways to arrive for a West End evening.
Luggage Storage Near the West End
If you're arriving in London and heading straight to a show, you probably don't want to drag a suitcase to the theatre. Here are your luggage storage options:
- Major railway stations: Victoria, King's Cross, Paddington, Liverpool Street, and Charing Cross all have left luggage facilities. Prices are typically Β£8βΒ£12 per bag for up to 24 hours. Look for Excess Baggage Company or LuggageHero counters.
- LuggageHero / Stasher / Nannybag: These app-based services partner with local shops, cafes, and hotels to offer luggage storage at hundreds of locations across London, including many in and around the West End. Prices start from Β£5βΒ£8 per bag per day. Book and pay via the app.
- Hotel luggage rooms: If you're staying at a hotel later that day, most hotels will store your luggage before check-in (and after check-out). Just ask at reception β it's usually a free service for guests.
Our recommendation: If you're arriving at a major station, use the station's own left luggage facility for convenience. If you're already in the West End and need to drop bags quickly, the app-based services are excellent β there are dozens of locations within walking distance of most theatres.
Oyster Cards & Contactless Payment
Navigating London's transport system is much easier (and cheaper) if you understand the payment options:
- Contactless payment cards: If you have a contactless debit or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Amex), you can tap in and out at tube gates, DLR platforms, Elizabeth Line stations, and on buses. This is the simplest option β no need to buy or top up anything. International cards work fine, though your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.
- Oyster cards: London's reusable travel card. You can buy one at any tube station for a Β£7 refundable deposit, then load it with credit. Fares are the same as contactless. Useful if your bank charges high foreign transaction fees.
- Apple Pay / Google Pay: Works exactly like a contactless card. Tap your phone or watch at the gates.
- Daily caps: Whether you use contactless or Oyster, your daily travel is capped at a maximum fare (currently around Β£8 for Zones 1β2). This means you'll never overpay no matter how many journeys you make in a day.
- Paper tickets: Avoid these if possible. Single-journey paper tickets cost significantly more than contactless or Oyster fares. The only exception is advance-purchase train tickets (like Stansted Express), which are often cheaper than tap-in fares.
Important: Always tap in AND tap out with the same card/device. If you forget to tap out, you'll be charged the maximum possible fare for that journey.
Airport Hotels vs Central London Hotels
If you're arriving late in the evening or departing early in the morning, you might consider staying at an airport hotel. But for a West End theatre trip, we strongly recommend staying in central London instead. Here's why:
- Convenience: After an evening show, the last thing you want is a 45-minute train journey back to an airport hotel. With a central hotel, you can walk from the theatre to your room in minutes.
- Evening atmosphere: The West End is magical after dark. Staying centrally lets you enjoy post-show drinks, late-night walks through Covent Garden, and the buzz of Soho.
- Cost comparison: Airport hotels and central London budget hotels are often similarly priced. A Premier Inn in Waterloo or a Z Hotel in Soho can cost less than a Heathrow or Gatwick hotel.
If you want to splash out, The Savoy, Rosewood London, and Claridge's are all within walking distance of the West End and offer a truly memorable experience. For mid-range options, The Waldorf Hilton and Covent Garden Hotel are excellent choices.

Arriving Late? How to Make a Same-Day Show
One of the most common questions we get is: "My flight lands at 3pm β can I still make a 7:30pm show?" The answer is almost always yes, but it depends on your airport and how smoothly things go.
Realistic timelines (from touchdown to theatre seat):
- London City: Land at 5:00pm β Theatre by 6:15pm. Plenty of time, even with luggage storage and a quick bite.
- Heathrow: Land at 3:30pm β Theatre by 6:00pm. Allow 30 minutes for immigration/baggage, 35 minutes on the Elizabeth Line, 15 minutes to settle. Comfortable.
- Gatwick: Land at 3:00pm β Theatre by 6:30pm. Allow 45 minutes for immigration/baggage, 45 minutes by train, 15 minutes to get to the theatre. Tight but doable.
- Stansted/Luton: Land at 2:30pm β Theatre by 6:30pm. Allow 30 minutes for immigration (usually faster at these airports), 60β75 minutes by train/express, 15 minutes to get to the theatre. Workable but stressful if there are delays.
Tips for making a same-day show after flying:
- Book flexible or last-minute tickets in case your flight is delayed.
- Travel with hand luggage only if possible β you'll skip the baggage carousel and save 20β30 minutes.
- Have your transport pre-planned. Know exactly which train or tube line to take before you land.
- Pre-book luggage storage near the theatre if you have bags.
- Eat something at the airport or on the plane. You won't have time for a sit-down pre-theatre dinner if your flight lands after 3pm.
