A weekend in London built around West End shows is one of the best trips you can take β whether you're visiting from overseas, travelling from elsewhere in the UK, or you're a Londoner treating yourself to a proper theatre getaway. Two days, two shows, and all the best bits of the city in between. This is our tried-and-tested itinerary for the ultimate West End weekend.
The itinerary below is designed for a couple or a group of friends, but we've also included alternative versions for romantic weekends and family weekends further down. If you're visiting the West End for the first time, our beginner's guide covers all the basics you need to know before you go.
Before You Go: Planning & Booking
A little advance planning makes the weekend run smoothly. Here's what to sort before you travel:
- Book your shows first. Pick one evening show (Friday or Saturday night) and one matinee (Saturday or Sunday afternoon). Evening shows start at 7:30pm; matinees usually at 2:30pm. Browse the full show listings to see what's on.
- Book your hotel. Stay in Covent Garden, Soho, or on the Strand for maximum convenience β you'll be walking distance from restaurants, bars, and theatres. See our hotel recommendations below.
- Book restaurants. Pre-theatre restaurants fill up fast, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Book at least a week in advance. See our best restaurants near the West End guide for recommendations.
- Book experiences. If you want to visit the Tower of London or ride the London Eye, book skip-the-line tickets online to save time on the day.
Use our Build Your Trip tool to package shows, hotel, and experiences together.
Friday Evening
4:00β5:00pm β Arrive & Check In
Aim to arrive in central London by late afternoon. If you're flying in, the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow takes just 35 minutes to Tottenham Court Road β right in the heart of the West End. Drop your bags at the hotel and freshen up. For transport details from every London airport, see our airport transfer guide.
5:30β6:45pm β Pre-Theatre Dinner
Head to your pre-booked restaurant for an early dinner. Most pre-theatre menus are served between 5:00β6:30pm and offer two courses for Β£18βΒ£28. Our top picks for Friday evening:
- Brasserie ZΓ©del, Piccadilly β Stunning Art Deco brasserie beneath Piccadilly. Prix fixe menu from just Β£14.50 for two courses. One of the best-value dinners in central London.
- Dishoom, Covent Garden β Bombay-inspired cuisine. No pre-theatre menu, but fast service and extraordinary food. The black daal is legendary.
- The Ivy Market Grill, Covent Garden β Classic British cuisine. Two courses from Β£22.50. Walking distance to the Lyceum, Novello, and Drury Lane theatres.
7:00β7:30pm β Walk to the Theatre
Leave the restaurant by 7:00pm and stroll to the theatre. Take in the atmosphere of Shaftesbury Avenue as it lights up β the buzz of Theatreland on a Friday evening is genuinely exciting. Arrive at the theatre by 7:15pm, grab a drink at the theatre bar, pre-order your interval drinks, and settle in.
7:30β10:00pm β Friday Night Show
Start your weekend with a blockbuster musical. Our recommendations for a spectacular opening night:
- Les MisΓ©rables β Sweeping, emotional, and utterly magnificent. The perfect way to start a theatre weekend. From Β£32.
- Wicked β Visually stunning with a soaring score. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser. From Β£25.
- Moulin Rouge! β Lavish, intoxicating, and electric. The ultimate Friday-night show. From Β£32.
- Hamilton β If you can get tickets, there's no better way to kick off a weekend. From Β£20 (lottery: Β£10).
10:00β11:30pm β Post-Show Drinks
The night is young. Head to a nearby bar for a post-show drink and a chat about the performance. Swift in Soho is a sleek cocktail bar on Old Compton Street. The Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden is a historic pub with real character. Or if you're treating yourself, The American Bar at The Savoy is one of the world's finest cocktail bars.
Saturday
9:00β10:00am β Breakfast
Start with a proper breakfast. If your hotel doesn't include one, head to Borough Market on the South Bank (open from 10am on Saturdays) for some of the best food in London β fresh pastries, artisan coffee, and every cuisine imaginable. Alternatively, the Breakfast Club in Soho or Covent Garden does excellent full English breakfasts (expect a short queue).
10:30amβ1:00pm β Morning Exploration
You've got a matinee at 2:30pm, so plan your morning accordingly. Choose one of these options:
Option A: South Bank & the London Eye
Walk along the South Bank from Borough Market towards Westminster. Stop at the London Eye for a 30-minute ride with panoramic views across the city. Pre-book tickets online to skip the queue. From the London Eye, it's a 15-minute walk across Westminster Bridge and through Trafalgar Square to the West End.
Option B: Tower of London
The Tower of London is nearly 1,000 years old, home to the Crown Jewels, and one of London's most fascinating attractions. Allow 2β2.5 hours and book skip-the-line tickets. Take the tube from Tower Hill to Leicester Square (15 minutes) to get back to the West End for your matinee.
Option C: Free Museums
London's world-class museums are free. The National Gallery on Trafalgar Square has an unrivalled collection of European art and is literally in the heart of the West End. The British Museum in Bloomsbury is a 10-minute walk from most theatres. Both are free and genuinely world-class.
1:00β2:00pm β Quick Lunch
Grab something light near the theatre. Chinatown (just off Leicester Square) has fast, excellent, affordable food β dim sum at a window-side table is a London institution. Alternatively, Five Guys, Franco Manca, or Flat Iron on Shaftesbury Avenue are quick and reliable.
2:30β5:00pm β Saturday Matinee
Your second show of the weekend. For the matinee, we recommend something different in tone from your Friday night show β variety is part of the fun. Great matinee picks:
- SIX The Musical β Just 80 minutes, no interval. A pop-concert reimagining of the six wives of Henry VIII. Fast, fun, and brilliant. From Β£25.
- The Play That Goes Wrong β Two hours of non-stop physical comedy. You'll laugh until your sides hurt. From Β£22.
- The Lion King β If you haven't seen it, the matinee is the perfect opportunity. Visually breathtaking. From Β£44.
- Witness for the Prosecution β Agatha Christie's courtroom thriller in the stunning County Hall. A completely different theatrical experience. From Β£20.
5:30β7:30pm β Soho & Covent Garden
After the matinee, explore the West End's two best neighbourhoods. Covent Garden's piazza has street performers, independent shops, and a lively atmosphere. Soho's narrow streets are packed with bars, restaurants, and character. Wander through both β they're a 5-minute walk apart.
7:30β9:30pm β Saturday Dinner
With no show to rush to, Saturday evening dinner can be a leisurely affair. Some recommendations:
- Hoppers, Soho β Sri Lankan street food. The hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes) and kari are exceptional. No bookings β arrive by 6:30pm to beat the queue.
- Flat Iron, Covent Garden β Outstanding steak for just Β£14. No bookings. Arrive early.
- Joe Allen, Covent Garden β The legendary theatre hangout. You might spot West End performers dining between shows. Pre-theatre menu from Β£24.50.
9:30pm onwards β Saturday Night Out
Soho comes alive on Saturday nights. The area around Old Compton Street and Dean Street is buzzing with bars and late-night restaurants. For cocktails, try Scarfes Bar at Rosewood London in Holborn, or Gordon's Wine Bar on Villiers Street (London's oldest wine bar, set in a candlelit cave).
Sunday
9:30β10:30am β Late Breakfast
Take it easy after Saturday night. Most hotels serve breakfast until 10β10:30am. If yours doesn't, Sunday brunch in Covent Garden is a treat β try Balthazar on Russell Street for a New York-style brunch in a Parisian-style brasserie.
11:00amβ1:00pm β Culture Fix
Use your final morning for one last London experience:
- Tate Modern, South Bank β Free entry to one of the world's best modern art museums. The Turbine Hall installations are always worth seeing.
- The View from The Shard β Panoramic views from western Europe's tallest building. Book in advance. Particularly stunning on a clear morning.
- Walk through St James's Park β From the West End, it's a 10-minute walk to London's most beautiful park. See Buckingham Palace, feed the pelicans, and enjoy the green space.
1:00β2:30pm β Final Lunch
Grab a farewell meal near your hotel or near the station you'll depart from. If heading to Heathrow via the Elizabeth Line from Tottenham Court Road, the restaurants around Soho Square and Cambridge Circus are perfectly positioned.
3:00pm onwards β Depart
The Elizabeth Line from Tottenham Court Road gets you to Heathrow in 35 minutes. For Gatwick, take the Thameslink from Farringdon or St Pancras (30β35 minutes). For St Pancras International (Eurostar), it's a short tube ride or a 20-minute walk from the West End.

Getting There & Getting Around
Once you're in central London, everything on this itinerary is walkable or a short tube ride away. Here are the key transport tips:
- From airports: The Elizabeth Line from Heathrow to Tottenham Court Road (35 minutes, Β£5.60) is the best option for most visitors. See our full airport transfer guide for routes from all London airports.
- Within London: Use contactless payment (debit card, credit card, or phone) on the tube and buses. Daily caps mean you'll never pay more than Β£8.10 in a day. For short journeys (under 20 minutes), walking is often faster than the tube.
- Luggage storage: If you're arriving before check-in or departing after checkout, luggage storage services at major stations (Victoria, King's Cross, Paddington) cost Β£8βΒ£12 per bag per day. Drop your bags and head straight out to explore.
- Flights: Budget airlines fly to London from across Europe for as little as Β£29 return. From further afield, check our flights page for the best deals to all London airports.
A theatre weekend in London is one of the great urban trips β a perfect blend of world-class entertainment, incredible food, and a city that never stops surprising you. Book your shows, pack your bags, and prepare for an unforgettable 48 hours.
