What the musical covers

The story opens on New Year's Eve 1942, when a young Italian-American singer steps onto the Paramount stage and changes popular music overnight. As his career rockets, Sinatra fights to balance his marriage to Nancy with the pressure and temptation that come with being America's biggest voice. An affair with Ava Gardner, falling record sales and a hostile press send his career into freefall before grit and craft rebuild the legend.

This is a book musical with scenes and character arcs, not a concert-style tribute. The songs are woven into the story, including "That's Life", "One For My Baby", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "Come Fly With Me" and "I've Got the World on a String". Expect swing, swagger and big ballads, along with a frank look at the man behind Ol' Blue Eyes.

Practical tips before you book

Sinatra The Musical runs about 2 hours 30 minutes, including an interval. It is recommended for ages 13 and up, and children under 5 are not admitted. The show includes swearing, mild violence, smoking, brief nudity and haze, plus lighting and video effects that may feel like strobe, so plan accordingly if you are booking for a mixed-age group.

The Aldwych Theatre sits at 49 Aldwych, London WC2B 4DF. Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) is about a five-minute walk, and Holborn and Temple are also close. The dress code is smart casual. Arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain so you can find your seats and grab a drink at the bar. For another big West End night nearby, compare seats for The Lion King on tickadoo.
