St. Ermin's Hotel is a grand Victorian hotel tucked away in a quiet courtyard just off Broadway, moments from St James's Park. The hotel has a fascinating history — it was used by MI6 and the SOE during the Second World War, and Churchill himself was a regular visitor. Today, it's a beautifully restored four-star hotel with ornate lobby plasterwork, a sweeping staircase and elegant rooms that blend period character with modern comfort.
The Caxton Bar & Grill serves excellent British cuisine in a relaxed setting, and the hotel keeps its own beehives on the roof — the honey appears at breakfast and in cocktails. The location is superb for Westminster sights (Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace are all within walking distance) and the West End is a short Tube ride from St James's Park station. It's a hotel with real character and a sense of history that sets it apart.

“What a hidden gem. The lobby is jaw-dropping — the plasterwork is extraordinary. Our room was spacious and quiet despite being so central. We walked through St James's Park to the West End for our show. The wartime history adds a lovely extra dimension.”

“Loved the honey theme — the rooftop beehives are such a nice touch. Breakfast was excellent. The hotel feels grand without being stuffy. We took the Tube to Piccadilly Circus for the theatre and it was quick and easy.”

“Excellent hotel in a surprisingly peaceful location. The Caxton Bar does a very good pre-theatre menu. Westminster Abbey and Parliament are walking distance if you want to sightsee during the day. Would definitely return.”
The hotel occasionally runs guided tours of the rooftop beehives and apiary. Ask at reception for upcoming dates. The honey is also available to purchase as a souvenir.
Victoria is about an eight-minute walk away, making it convenient if you're arriving by train from Gatwick Airport or the south coast. St James's Park station is even closer — just one minute from the hotel entrance.
Yes, the Caxton Bar & Grill offers an early evening menu that's well-timed for theatre. It's popular so booking ahead is recommended, particularly on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The hotel does not have its own car park but there is an NCP car park nearby on Abingdon Street. Central London congestion charges and parking costs are high, so public transport is recommended.
It's about a 20-minute walk through St James's Park and across Trafalgar Square to theatreland, which is a lovely route. Alternatively, the District line from St James's Park gets you to the Embankment in a few minutes.
