About The Montague on the Gardens

The Montague on the Gardens occupies a handsome Georgian terrace backing directly onto the private gardens of the British Museum — a serene setting that belies its central Bloomsbury location. The hotel is traditionally English in style, with antique-furnished lounges, a wood-panelled bar and an elegant conservatory restaurant overlooking the garden terrace.

Afternoon tea at The Montague is a quintessentially English experience, served in the conservatory or on the garden terrace in summer. The Chef's Table restaurant serves refined British and European cuisine. The British Museum is literally next door, while the West End theatres are about a fifteen-minute walk south through Bloomsbury's elegant squares and streets.

The most delightful afternoon tea in a beautiful conservatory overlooking the garden. The British Museum is right there — we popped in twice. Lovely traditional hotel with warm, attentive staff.

A very English hotel in the best sense. Our room was comfortable and traditionally furnished, the garden terrace was lovely for a drink, and we walked through the museum grounds to reach the hotel each day.

Beautiful setting backing onto the museum gardens. The conservatory restaurant was excellent. It's not the most modern hotel, but that's the charm. Good walk through Bloomsbury to the theatres.

Frequently asked questions

Can I access the British Museum gardens from the hotel?

The hotel backs onto the British Museum's private gardens, which can be viewed from the terrace and some rooms. Access to the gardens is via the museum itself during opening hours.

Is afternoon tea popular?

Very. The conservatory tea is one of Bloomsbury's best. Book at least a few days in advance, especially for weekends and during the Christmas season.

Is the hotel close to theatres?

The West End theatre district is about 15 minutes' walk south through Bloomsbury. Or take the Piccadilly line from Russell Square to Leicester Square (one stop).

Is the area quiet?

Yes, Bloomsbury is one of central London's quieter neighbourhoods, with elegant Georgian squares and tree-lined streets. It's peaceful but very central.
