West End Plays & Comedy

While London's West End is world-famous for its musicals, the capital's theatre scene offers an equally extraordinary range of plays and comedies. From Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution, performed in the stunning setting of London County Hall's real courtroom, to the record-breaking Mousetrap, which has been running continuously since 1952, London plays offer experiences you simply cannot get anywhere else.

What are the best West End plays right now?

Standout productions in 2026 include immersive experiences like Witness for the Prosecution, where the audience sits in the jury box, and The Mousetrap at St Martin's Theatre, the world's longest-running show. For comedy, Fawlty Towers: The Play has brought John Cleese's beloved sitcom to the West End stage to rave reviews, while The Play That Goes Wrong continues to delight audiences with its brilliantly choreographed chaos.

Plays vs musicals: which should you see?

Plays tend to be shorter than musicals (typically 1.5-2.5 hours) and ticket prices are often lower, making them excellent value. They're ideal for audiences who prefer dialogue-driven storytelling over song and dance. Many plays also feature star casting: look out for film and TV actors making West End debuts throughout the year.

Comedy shows in London's West End

West End comedy ranges from classic farce (The Play That Goes Wrong, Fawlty Towers) to sharp satirical new writing. Comedy shows are perfect for date nights and group outings: the shared experience of laughing together in a theatre is something streaming can never replicate. Most comedy productions are suitable for ages 12+ and run 2-2.5 hours.
